Indulge me for a moment

Every morning Young Padawan races to get ready for school. His reward for his efficiency is a few minutes of Mario Kart before his ride gets here. Mid-race I have finished his sister's hair, confirmed that backpacks are full of essentials, and ferreted out Padawan's shoes from the utter confusion of the shoe closet. I shake out sand, unlace yesterday's lacing, put them on his limp feet and tie them for him as he cranes his head around me, ingoring me completely in his intense navigation through the rocky terrain of Mushroom Gorge.

Why do I do this for him? Is it really easier to put them on for him day after day than it is to teach him to do it?

Yes.

At the time I mean. It's just quicker to do it for him. And get him out the door on time. He's definitely old enough to tie his own shoes. But he'll learn it one day. I'm not too worried. Nothing's wrong with babying a kid who any day will reject all babying.

Ah, the things we do for our kids! Blake and I were laughing last night when Dutch Baby was yelling from upstairs, "I WANT MY WATER AND ICE!" The routine here involves handing Her Highness a sippy cup before bedtime. She takes the cup, shakes it to ensure the proportion of ice to water is correct, and then tucks it between the wall and her pillow. The only time she'll sip it is later in the night when the ice is long gone. But the ice must be there upon delivery.

One day this routine will be long behind us and we'll have amused conversations about how we used to do this for our baby girl and not remember how the routine even went out of routine. And how I used to tie shoes on her brother while he played video games before school.

And we'll wish our kids wanted us to do little things like this for them again.

Silly indulgent routines, we'll hang on to you as long as we can.

Tell your Padawan that I have a crown for saving the princess on Mario Brothers...and that I can tie my own shoes too. But he doesn't need to do both right now, because I agree, they are growing sooo very fast.

i don't think kaylee even knows what laces are. whooops...she may be 12 by the time we get her to tie those shoes...right now she has elastics...but Cade, he refuses to put any shoes on himself unassisted.

Good reminder on perspective, Jenna. Thanks. I think I'll have to always refer to Holl as "Dutch Baby" from now on--that's about the cutest thing ever.

I'm glad I'm not the only one doing things for my kids that they could do themselves. (Like buttoning my 5 year old's shirt this morning.) I guess I should enjoy my work a little more sometimes. Good post.

Here's the funny thing....I am working in a nursing home at nights. It is amazing and surprising how the old and helpless people are JUST like our children! They want their water bottles filled, but left empty one inch from the top. They want their tissue box on their bedside table, but facing a certain way. They want their shirt hung in their closet in a particular order (although they are immobile and will never see the inside of their closet). So see what we have to look forward to?

Enjoy them while you can. Before you know it they will have grown up and moved to Utah and Arizona, and you just have a limited memory of them playing pong.

Next he'll be asking to eat a pie straight out of the tin while he's sitting there on the couch.

No wonder the boys are always last to walk out to my car in the morning as I think to myself...aren't girls usually slower in the morning to get ready? It all makes sense now! Remember next week we will be gone and next week there will be a detour due to the rail road tracks. Sorry Jenna

I know exactly what you mean Jenna! It's so much easier to get Cam ready while he's engrossed in the tv. ha ha ha I also told Brennan that I get to keep his blanket if he keeps asking me for water after he's in bed. I'm nipping that one in the bud now but he is almost 8. You have a while to go with Holland. :-)
