When Ada Wrigley, the wife of William Wrigley, Jr., told her husband how much she loved Catalina Island, he bought the entire island for her. Because of America's love for chewing gum Mr. Wrigley also was able to buy his wife a handful of mansions all across the country. One of those is in Phoenix, AZ: a 16,000 square foot "winter cottage." It was a gift for their 50th wedding anniversary.
Since Blake does not run a billion-dollar gum company he was unable to purchase an island for me for my birthday or anniversary this year. Maybe next year? I instead settled on
Option B: a weekend staycation in Scottsdale, a package containing:
- a two-night stay at the Millenium Resort at McCormick Ranch
- delicious food (ah! the food!),
- comedy club evening complete with mediocre- but clean!- improv
- a tour of nearby Wrigley Mansion
- a bike ride
- a swim
- a paddleboat excursion
- dinner and fireworks over Camelback Lake
- guaranteed two nights of sleep without taking a toddler potty
- and time to read poolside.
I'd take that over some dumb mansion anyday.
So a little more about the glorious food. Blake and I saw this place on Diner's, Drive-ins, and Dives. We have been salivating ever since. Visiting here was top priority.
Seriously.
While we discovered Over Easy on our own we have these good friends to thank for making most of our food possible. Tony and Alisha know every little obscurely delicious hovel in all of Greater Phoenix. We consider them our food tutors. We will be blessing their eternal souls for introducing us to Postino's and their savory bruschettas.
Thank you for expanding our meat-and-Idaho-potato palates. Life has so much more color now.
Bless your eternal souls.
I could prattle on and on about other devoured delicacies, and show them to you too, since we took pictures of every pretty meal served us. But I will spare you that. Thank you, Blake, for giving me a weekend befitting a gum magnate's wife.
I am sufficiently pampered and restored.
And craving prosciutto with figs and marscapone.

I want to see more pictures.
I bet Mrs. Wrigley did not get carmalized banana and pecan french toast on Catalina Island. Happy Anniversary.
I'm with Barb, I wouldn't mind a few more pictures, especially of the food! (I'll probably pass on the ones of Blake laying by the pool). :)
Do I always look like I have veins popping out of my head? Maybe I was just really tired. hmmm.....
Whoah. That food is naughty. Sounds like a great trip. Congrats!
I saw that place on Triple D. It looked really good!
We saw that on DD&D too. My mouth salivates every time I watch that dang show. I think I owe these extra 15 pounds I'm packing around to Guy.
That looks delish! Glad you had a good time!
