First of all, you need this cookbook, Dinner in a Jar by Kathy Clark. You can get it at Amazon by clicking here or find it at your local Honeyville Farms store, if you happen to live by one. Click here to see if you do.
In the book Kathy Clark demonstrates two ways to build these meals: in a jar or in a mylar bag. The mylar bag route is cheaper and stores more compactly. The jars are prettier. You choose.
Here's what you'd do if you go mylar:

Now that you have your pockets, you need a recipe. Let's pick, oh, how about hamburger soup.

Get out the first four ingredients listed:

To finish your jars, combine all spices and place in a plastic baggie. Place the baggie in the jar and add your oxygen absorber. The reason you use the baggie is to keep the spices out of the rice. Otherwise they'd be lost when cooking the rice.

Put on your jar lid and there you have it. Pretty food storage in a jar. Good for 5 years.
To finish the mylar meals,

Last step: Make a copy of the future instructions and glue onto your jar or mylar bag. This is so you know what it is and what to do with it in 2015.

And there you go! It's such a great way to know for sure you have tasty options in your food storage. Cuz seriously, who wants to eat hard white wheat kernals and pinto beans during the Apocalypse. Might as well go down with a good meal in your belly.
Plus it's pretty.
Did I mention that already.

that looks fun. Do you have dehydrated beef or can you make it without the beef, or are you just planning on using beef from the freezer if you have it? Just curious. I see people can meat, and I just don't dare. I'm afraid I would do it wrong and kill my family off with food poisoning or something.
I've been buying freeze-dried beef from Honeyville. It's good for 25 years unopened. I also buy the canned roast beef from Costco, just to have on hand to add to a meal any time.
Where do you get Mylar bags?
Oh yes, good question. I got mine at Honeyville Farms of course. But I googled it and you can get some from Amazon and other websites.
I also realized in the googling that there are other sizes of mylar bags. The ones I use are 20x30 inches.
Wahoo! I love this. Timing sucks to do this right now, but at least I know how to find it.
I have everything but the Honeyville corn. I'm totally going to do this. Thanks!
Oh dear. Holly is my sister-in-law who was recently playing at my house. That last comment was from Mrs. Olsen!
