Go See Jack!

There aren't a lot of attractions that Maricopa can boast of, but we do have the Leaf and Feather farm. For those that haven't been it's what it sounds like: a nursery where you can buy affordable plants, and also take a little walk around to see all kinds of caged birds, giant turtles, and wild peacocks strutting their stuff. My brother and his wife Sara were visiting last weekend and so we spent the morning among some leaves and feathers.I'm not opposed to zoos by any means (how else would you ever see how tall a lion actually stands, or see a kangaroo hopping in real life?), but there is always something depressing about seeing animals in cages. And Jack the Monkey, the main attraction of the attraction, is the best example. When we walked up to Jack's home he had a blanket over him and was rocking back and forth. After realizing we were there he came out and began his monkey antics, glad for the company I think. He lives alone, with no monkey lovin', and eats peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with flies on it. Not exactly the dream life of a chimp. He needs company. This is a call for all Maricopans to call on Jack. He's lonely. The kids won't realize that incessant rocking is a sign of serious mental distress. They will just like seeing the monkey.

Poor Jack does have some issues. He is fun, though! Nice idea to visit L&F with family. I am always trying to come up with something to do.

How sad. Maybe you should send the owners a letter and request that Jack get a friend.

I never knew you had joined up with the animal rights activists! Way to have a purpose! Your day at the farm reminds me of when we went up to the ranch up by redrock...so impressive! And then we hit the PETTING zoo and Derrick wouldn't allow my children to touch anything, let alone the animals! You know...germs, germs, germs! Aaahhh, great memories. kelli

We love the L&F farm, although we've only been twice. I usually love the zoo, but felt the same as I saw Jack in his filthy cage. He was eating fly-infested oreos last time we saw him, and well doing what he does best (?) the entire time we were there!

I love leaf and feather, but make sure you don't go with a large group! My sister and her friend got kicked out because there was a mother's group there that overran the place and made the owner's mad!
