Southpaw Shoutout

It's a special day today. It's National Left-Hander's Day, a day all right-handers should applaud lefties for all we've had to overcome to succeed in your world. Think I'm exaggerating our plight? Look down and see what hand you have over the mouse right now.

We deserve this day of recognition for all we have to put up with in a predominantly right-handed society. For example, unless you are left-handed like me, you have no idea how tricky scissors can be. Or learning to bowl from a right-handed teacher. Or writing in a notebook. The binding is right in the way. I also struggle with handheld can openers, but that could just be me personally.

10% of the human population is left-handed and I feel a sense of camaraderie with these people. I can spot a left-hander as soon as there is a pen in hand. Blake gets sick of me always yelling out "LEFT-HANDED!" when we are watching movies, because I always notice- and if you pay attention, you will see that a huge percentage of actors and actresses are left-handed. It's the right-brain, the dominant side for left-handers that's the artsy side.

Southpaws rank among the most beautiful,

the most humorous,

the most influential,

the most re-diddly-igious

and the most talented people of our day.

I'm proud to be among them. My favorite left-handers I know personally include my brother, Brett, Blake's brother Steve, nieces and nephews Rilee, Brennan, and Mason, cousin Chris, and Grandpa K (who's probably genetically responsible for my condition). As well as many friends who are kindred spirits. May you all have a great day and enjoy your uniqueness.

*Other famous lefties include Ronny Reagan, Steve Forbes, Julius Caesar, Napoleon (Bonaparte, not Dynamite...hmmm, maybe?), Jay Leno, Carole Burnett, Michelangelo, Steve Young, Larry Bird, and the Great Babe Ruth.

Derrick is a lefty too. I think I like lefties, but I sure don't love sitting next to them at the table!

Other interesting tidbits I found about left handers:

-It's a History Fact: Did you know that During the 1600's people, thought left handers were witches and warlocks!

-It's a History Fact: There was a time when being left handed was seen as a sign of the devil and those who were though to be left handed would have their hands tied behind their back to force them to write with the right hand.

-The word "sinister" means "left" in Latin.

Happy Left Day Lefty :o) My brother and I were right & left handed forgot the word for that but...our teachers forced us to be right handed. I still do many things with my handy dandy left hand but can't write nearly as neat with it these days and you're right the spiral gets in the way. :o)

My hubby is left handed. my grandpa is left handed too and he is the smartest person alive! People think I'm crazy but I think it's because he's left handed. I hope all my kids are (even if I have to tie their right hand behind their back!) Just kidding. :) I will just reward the lefties! ;)

Ryan and I are both left-handed! I thought for sure we'd have a good chance of having lefty kids. Only Christian seems to be using his right mind!

This made me laugh! It brought back memories of an old boyfriends mother telling me that a lot of the architects in ancient greece were left handed, and that is why their buildings were beautiful...or something like that.... I just thought it was crazy talk!

I remember Chris always having to sit on the end so we would not bang elbows at dinner. HA HA.

we lefties are pretty cool, I must admit. Afterall, everyone is born right handed, but only the strongest overcome it! :)

I heard that the winner of the Olympic women's marathon (my FAVORITE Olympic event) is left-handed.

Hi Jenna, I sneeked onto your blog through Jen. Interesting blog on lefties. I am married to one, one of my sisters is one, it skipped a generation, I have no left handed kids, but so far one grandchild is left handed. You all must be very smart since you must adapt to many right handed situations. The real reason I broke the blog barrier is because I can't remember the name of the book you suggested. I remember it was something like eat, read, pray. I just can't remember, please help me out! I have a blog, I'm on facebook, & I have e-mail. Take your pick.
