I grew up in a modern-day Little Town on the Prairie. Every evening in each home in this blessed town little half-pints get tucked into bed by both ma and pa after a good scripture story and a warsh behind the ears. Church every Sunday is flanked by roast and potatoes. Horse-drawn wagons though?... No- this town traded those for fleets of minivans years ago. This is Rexburg, Idaho, a town comprised of the Mormoniest bunch of Mormons ever found in one place.

With all the singularity of thought in priorities, routines, and religious exercise, I shouldn't have been surprised the other night when,

upon seeing a sky choked with smoke from a nearby wildfire,

my father-in-law asked if I wanted to go up the hill a half-mile or so to photograph the LDS Temple with the unusual colors in the sky behind it. Off we fled with cameras in hand. As we rounded the corner and the temple came into view we both laughed when we saw this:

The rest of Rexburg also photographing the temple with the unusual sky behind it. Yes, I shouldn't be surprised. This is Rexburg.

And I'm Mary Ingalls Mormon.

My father-in-law, mid-prairie, got some good shots just before a cop showed up and told photographers to get out of the wheat field across the street from the temple. Poor cop. There's not really anything else for him to do in a town like this. To see other shots of the amazing skyline from a savvy next-door neighbor, click here.

That last picture is awesome. Also, since it's Rexburg, everyone on that hill was thinking it's the second coming.

But the best part of the post is that you somehow weaseled the word 'flanked' in there ;)

My favorite part is that you selected Mary instead of Laura. You know, because it's a post about photography and Mary was blind. Kinda funny, huh?

Wow. We are going to Rexburg tomorrow. I almost hope the sky will remain as amazing. And go, Roberta.

I could not believe, growing up, that we had the most beautiful sunsets in the world (with or without a forest fire). It was not until I saw sunsets all over the world that I finally believed.

I love that the Temple is in view all over our town, and I love the wheat field by it. I asked the owners never to sell. It looks so gorgeous.

I love Rexburg, and although so many people think the same, that thinking is radically different from anywhere else I have lived in the world, and I love them for it.

It seems often that the rest of the world thinks the same, and Southeast Idaho is the radical.

Oh, and I think that I visited your ward once. (You did not go to the same ward as Jamie Bolton, did you?) If so, you beat my little area (Burton/Independence) for most like Little House on the Prairie.

Ha ha! Love this post and love the pure white temple with fury of hell in the background.

That's where I'm running when I see fury of hell in the sky.

But see, Anna, Mary Mormon sounds better than Laura Mormon. Plus Mary wasn't always blind. I bet she would have been a good photographer, had she had a digital camera with her in the prairie...and had she really existed.

Mary really did exist and the whole Ingalls clan. Ask Brad, I know all of the episodes and books. Show is not true though, of course. Love the awesome pictures!

Oh that's right- I've read them all too. I had temporarily forgotten that fact. The smoke from the wildfire must have clouded my memory temporarity...
