"It Doesn't Have To Be Like That"

My awareness about the lack of awareness that exists out there about one of my favorite pop bands began with another post a couple of months ago. This one sported Conner and Claire sharing an Ipod. Barb asked me what they liked to listen to on it and I told her that they are particularly fond of Erasure. Her response stunned me. "What's Erasure?" Then I told this story to Robyn who didn't know Erasure either. How could this be?

Erasure sums up my adolescence. I sang Oh L'Amour to my crushes (yes, Blake to you, too, who broke my heart and now I'm aching for you). I hoped that Wendy's would accept my application for employment; Take a Chance on Me. To post-boyfriends: I LOVE TO HATE YOU! (except you, Blake). Every August in high school my friends and I jammed to the whole Pop! 20 Hits album while driving to Jackson, WY to buy our school clothes at Benetton and J. Crew. So many of my favorites in that album, Chains of Love, Blue Savannah, Stop!...

How could such a band fade into oblivion so quickly? With more research with my peers I came to realize that Erasure had a very small window of fame. It seems that most of my friends age 31 and under have never heard of them. Yesterday coming home from a Ladies Night Out (Stake Temple Night) I was discussing this very topic and Leslie, 34, was INSISTANT that the songs I was mentioning were Abba songs. We argued this point for several miles and so this morning I checked it out on Wikipedia and found we were both right. Erasure did some Abba-esque songs, Abba turned around and did some Erasure-esque songs. I had no idea. This was my favorite band and I knew so little about them. AND I came to find out Erasure is still producing stuff but apparently the new century is not as keen on synth-pop.

Ah well, that's the problem with getting old, I guess. The good ol' days get left farther and farther behind. I will hang on though. Erasure is great cleaning music.

I still can't believe that Brandon was too young to ever watch "Charles in Charge". But he does like when I sing the theme song.

Lucky...I'm jealous you went to Jackson to go school clothes shopping. I resorted to the IF mall. WOO HOO!!!

I recently came in contact with Cam Shirley and Dallin Wright. The links are on the side of my blog.

By the way...Erasure was/is the bomb!!!

For the record, I do know OF Erasure, but it wasn't a band I could have told you much about. I turned some of their music on playlist.com, and I knew quite a few songs, and now William is fan!

How do you grow up in the 80'a and early 90's and NOT know who Erasure is?! You grew up in Idaho and still new who they were!

We have so much in common...but I really hate Erasure! That whole synthetic sound makes me crazy. I'll stick with The Cure. Speaking of Erasure, I think Derrick's brother and sister in-law went to an Erasure concert maybe three or four years ago. They actually came all the way to Vegas to see them. Whatever. To each their own, right? And I'm glad that the temple inspired you to have such a spiritual and uplifting conversation on the way home! ha ha. kelli

Jenna darling we weren't arguing for that long, it was really just a discussion not arguing right because we had just gone to the Temple and we don't argue after such a lovely experience. :O)

Oh yeah and I'm only 33 years old 34 is still a couple of months away.

But I too looked it up and discovered that you were correct that Eurasure did sing some of the same tunes that Abba sang. :o) I love both groups by the way. And unforunately we are getting older..that was like 15 years ago.

so sorry, Leslie! It was not my place to even mention your age at all on my blog...that's akin to identity theft.

I remember Erasure! We listened to it in my friend's Ford Mustang, while we were wearing our "Units" and sporting our ratted bangs and permed hair. Does anyone remember Units? http://www.essortment.com/lifestyle/popularclothing_tuvz.htm

90% of our fights resulted from your obsession with all these crappy bands...

LOL! What a riot.. I do remember Take a Chance on Me, but still think it sounds Abba-ish. I'm off to check out Erasure right now...Ben says he remembers them and he's younger than me!

PS---I always wondered if everyone shopped in Jackson, SL, or resorted to IF when I lived in Rexburg!

I love Erasure! The worst thing about talking about Erasure and things like that from growing up is realizing that we are aging....and aging quickly. Not too long ago I mentioned the movie Top Gun to a friend and she had no idea what I was talking about! Ya.....just that conversation aged me about another 5 years. *sigh*
