In the upper elite circles of French aristocracy, young girls who are reaching marrying age are given "coming-out parties" where they are formally introduced to the neighborhood's red-blooded bachelors in elegant debutante balls.

Native Hawaiian tribes have a hut where ladies go when they begin...becoming ladies, to put in delicately. They spend their "time" there getting pampered by other ladies who welcome them into womanhood with great veneration.

In the conservative Mormon culture I grew up in, rites of passage are definably less cruel or ostenstatious. These include 1) getting your first haircut as an infant, and 2)entering baptismal waters at 8 years old. Still later in life, another significant rite of passage in becoming a Mormon woman is learning to embellish scrapbook pages which depict your first haircut and Baptism Day.
But perhaps the most grueling and monumental of all rites of passage in Mormon culture is the day that you host your first extended family reunion.
I am now a woman.

You forgot the 'first girls camp' right of passage. You know, when the older girls steal your bra and hang it from the flag pole?
Hey wait, I didn't learn to scrapbook until I got my current job. Does that mean I wasn't really a woman until last year?
hey Jenna, it was sure nice to see you. too bad my house alarm went off about 2 seconds later and I had to run home. good thing you were across the room or I'd think the attempted break-in was all too coincidental with your arrival in town:)
Are you still here?
Great Reunion Jenna! It was tons of fun!!
It was a blast and you guys did GREAT!
Very clever, as usual. Congrats on gaining your womanhood. Tom was just showing me his tattoo today that is STILL there from Rafe/Holl's party.
That greuling, eh? We had a splendid time, thanks for hosting.
Roar! I love your posts- so clever and sarcastic. Awesome. And I don't qualify for woman yet. I think I'm ok with that for now though.
I am in Rexburg, and I love this people. As I sat in Wal-Mart, the two girls next to me debated on when they were truly adult. One said, "When you give your first prayer in Sacrament meeting".
I should have referred them to your website for the truth.
As usual, you are awesome. You see things that are so funny and true, but I never thought about it.
Oh, and I am not yet a woman...someday.
